The 4th of July celebrates the United States declaring independence from Britain in 1776. It represents freedom, liberty, and the birth of America.
For many Black people, the holiday has a deeper and more complicated meaning because when America declared “freedom,” many Black people were still enslaved. So the 4th of July can feel like a reminder that freedom did not include everyone at that time.
That’s why some Black Americans connect more strongly with Juneteenth, which celebrates June 19, 1865, when enslaved Black people in Texas were finally told they were free.
So briefly: the 4th of July celebrates America’s freedom, but for Black people it also reminds us to reflect on the fight for true freedom, justice, and equality.
