During the early years of the Obama administration—before LGBTQ people were fully accepted in the military and while the Clinton-era “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was still in effect—Black lesbians, particularly masculine-presenting Black women, were disproportionately targeted and prosecuted under military law for DADT violations.

They were prosecuted at significantly higher rates than white gay men, Black gay men, or white lesbians. This disparity provides quantitative evidence supporting Hellkat’s claim and highlights how Black women's gender expression shaped enforcement under DADT—not just sexual orientation alone.
