Women’s sexual health has always centered things like pH balance, pregnancy, birth control, menstruation, etc.—the kinda stuff Lesbians, especially Black Lesbians, were already organizing around as midwives, herbalists, and church aunties holding communities together.

Meanwhile, many white gay men wanted NOTHING to do with Black folk or women, and mostly rejected Lesbians… till AIDS hit in 1984. Then Act-Up formed under white male leadership, and everything shifted, pulling bi, trans, and intersex folks into a movement that hadn’t originally centered them or their needs because—men, being men—never saw fit to think about DICK & BALLS health 🍑👀🍆 ONLY after HIV/AIDS did men start using condoms, creating HIV treatments and Prophylactic antibiotics (PrEP).
