The value of an expensive bag or pair of shoes drops as soon as you leave the store, similar to a car. Jewelry, at least, retains value if it’s made of gold or silver, because these are traded on the Exchange and backed by the Treasury. When the gold supply in the treasury is low, there is a huge payoff for selling your gold chains, “high value” watches, earrings, etc. Plus, in times of crisis, gold and precious stones can be used for bartering.Those are the “only” thing in “mankind’s history” that retained value even if it’s melted down to various forms>> gold, silver, and precious metals. It’s how a few extremely fortunate Jews managed to escape to freedom during the Nazi takeover.
